Chronology of cameras Bloch
Were our ancestors voyeurs? The Physiographe is not the only model of its kind, as other brands besides Bloch produced cameras for discreetly aiming at corners. This one allows for capturing 12 stereoscopic views in the format of 52 x 118. The Bloch brand stands out in the field by offering various models, whether monocular or stereo, monocular or binocular.
According to the 1898 Annuaire:
The manufacturer aimed to create a camera that closely resembles a field binocular. The objectives visible at the front are merely for aesthetics; this part of the camera opens like a box lid, revealing a compartment used for changing plates. The actual objectives are on the side, along the left tube, with the plates housed in the other tube, lengthwise. Two stereoscopic images, each measuring 5 centimeters, are obtained. The eyepieces are also simulated, but one of them is used as a viewfinder; it receives the image from a small lens placed on the side of the camera, an image that is reflected to it by a mirror inclined at 45°. Thus, it gives the impression of looking straight ahead, when in reality, one is capturing a subject on the side. As the camera also looks like an ordinary telescope, there is a chance that the subject being photographed remains unaware, preserving their natural demeanor.
